ABC printables are the perfect way to introduce children to the letters of the alphabet. Children typically learn the ABC song before they are able to identify individual letters.
Use the following ABC mats while children are learning the song. Have them use their index finger to point to the letters as they are singing the song.
You'll have to initially sing the song at a slower pace so the kids can can keep up, especially during the l-m-n-o-p section. This is the place where children tend to have the most trouble pronouncing the individual letters. Using the mats helps them realize there are several letters involved. Soon enough though, the children will have no trouble keeping up and will be able to identify the letters.
There are alphabet printable mats for both upper and lower case letters. Get started now... just click, print and sing!
Once children are able to point and follow along with the letters as they sing, they are also learning to recognize the individual letters. And this, as we all know, is the first step to reading.
*I recommend using the mats only after children have learned to identify at least a few of the letters.
More uses for the mats:
Once the children have learned to sing the ABC song using the mat... and can identify all the letters... then use the preschool printable mats to challenge them. "Can you find the M?" or "Point to the G". Or just randomly call out letters. The more often children see a letter, the easier it is for them to remember it.
OR... use the mat to point out letters and ask for the sound the letter makes. OR... make a letter sound and see if the child can identify the letter.
OR... point to a letter and see if your child can find an object in your home that begins with the same letter. OR... start with the A to find an object that begins with that letter. Laminate the mat and let the child cross off the letter as objects are found. Continue with the letter B. How many objects for the letters of the alphabet can you find?
OR... laminate the mat and have the children trace the letters with watercolor markers.
OR... cut the mat apart to form individual letters for making words or letting the child make their names.
